Book series can be read in more than one order, and which one is right depends on the series. Most of the confusion comes from two questions: publication order or chronological order, and whether the side books matter.
Publication order is the safe default
Publication order is the sequence in which the books first appeared. It is the order the author wrote them, so it never assumes knowledge the reader cannot have. If a series is still being published, publication order and reading order are usually the same thing.
Chronological order can spoil earlier books
Prequels are written after the books they precede and often assume you already know how the story ends. Reading a prequel first is a choice, not a mistake, but it changes what counts as a surprise.
When the side books matter
Novellas and short stories published between novels sometimes carry plot that later books build on. The series pages on this site list every book attached to a series in publication order, so the side entries appear where they were published rather than at the end.
