Zane Grey

Zane Grey was one of the prominent authors of America who used to write his novels based on the western fiction genre. He was born as Pearl Zane Gray on January 31, 1872 in Zanesville, Ohio, United States. Zane died on October 23, 1939 at the age of 67 in Altadena, California.

The best place to start is The Ohio River Trilogy series, the earliest of Zane Grey's multi-book series: it opens with Betty Zane (1903) and runs to 3 books across 1903–1909, ending with The Last Trail (1909). Zane Grey's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Zane Grey has 159 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1903 and 2021. 30 of them belong to 10 named series — the largest being The Golden West series with 7 books — and 129 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Zane Grey's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are The Ohio River Trilogy (1903–1909, 3 books), Ken Ward (1910–1912, 4 books) and Riders of the Purple Sage (1912–1915, 3 books), plus 7 more.

This guide splits Zane Grey's 159 books into 10 named series and 129 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: The Golden West (7 books, 2000–2006); Ken Ward (4 books, 1910–1912); Pan Handle Smith (3 books, 1914–1947); Riders of the Purple Sage (3 books, 1912–1915); The Ohio River Trilogy (3 books, 1903–1909), plus 5 further series.
