Todd McCaffrey

Todd McCaffrey is an American Irish author best known for writing a series of science fiction novels, the most popular of which is the Dragonriders of Pern series, which he coauthored with Anne McCaffrey. Todd was born in Montclair, New Jersey to Anne McCaffrey an author and Horace Wright Johnson a Dupont employee. Except for a brief period when his father was transferred to Dusseldorf, Germany, for the most part the family was resident in Wilmington in Delaware.

The best place to start is the Dragonriders of Pern series, the earliest of Todd McCaffrey's multi-book series: it opens with Dragonflight (1968) and runs to 30 books across 1968–2018, ending with Dragon's Code (2018). Todd McCaffrey's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Todd McCaffrey has 155 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1968 and 2025. 138 of them belong to 12 named series — the largest being the Dragonriders of Pern series with 30 books — and 17 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Todd McCaffrey's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Dragonriders of Pern (1968–2018, 30 books), Combat Command (1977–1989, 10 books) and New Adventures of Pern (2003–2011, 5 books), plus 7 more.

This guide splits Todd McCaffrey's 155 books into 12 named series and 17 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: Dragonriders of Pern (30 books, 1968–2018); The Twin Souls (20 books, 2018–2021); Combat Command (10 books, 1977–1989); LA Witch (8 books, 2022–2023); Cody's War (7 books, 2024), plus 7 further series.
