Hartmann, even though he was a “gifted” student, he was expelled from his high school in the tenth grade for starting a paper that protested the Vietnam War. He would later earn his GED. He enrolled at Lansing Community College and transferred to Michigan State University, majoring in electrical engineering. In 1968, he opened his first business, a repair shop called “The Electronics Joint” which was located right next to Michigan State University.
