Theodore Sturgeon

He went to sea for three years, and started publishing science fiction in the year 1939 yet stopped producing it after just a few years and went abroad. In 1946 he started writing again and, during the next fifteen years, produced all of the work that he is famous for. Theodore is one of science fiction’s best writers.

The best place to start is the Star Trek Fotonovel series, the earliest of Theodore Sturgeon's multi-book series: it opens with Amok Time (1967) and runs to 11 books across 1967–1982, ending with Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan (1982). Theodore Sturgeon's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Theodore Sturgeon has 218 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1943 and 2025. 129 of them belong to 5 named series — the largest being The Complete Stories of Theodore Sturgeon series with 13 books — and 89 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Theodore Sturgeon's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Star Trek Fotonovel (1967–1982, 11 books) and The Complete Stories of Theodore Sturgeon (1995–2010, 13 books).

This guide splits Theodore Sturgeon's 218 books into 5 named series and 89 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: The Complete Stories of Theodore Sturgeon (13 books, 1995–2010); Star Trek Fotonovel (11 books, 1967–1982); Star Trek: TOS (61 books, 1982–2013); L. Ron Hubbard Presents: Writers of the Future (41 books, 1985–2025); The Dark Descent (3 books, 1987–1991).
