Stella Duffy

Stella Duffy is a renowned English author of science fiction, mystery, and historical fiction novels. She is particularly well known for writing the Saz Martin book series, the Novel of Empress Theodora book series, and the Roderick Alleyn series. Duffy wrote the latter in collaboration with author Ngaio Marsh.

The best place to start is the Roderick Alleyn series, the earliest of Stella Duffy's multi-book series: it opens with A Man Lay Dead (1934) and runs to 35 books across 1934–2018, ending with Money in the Morgue (2018). Stella Duffy's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Stella Duffy has 150 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1934 and 2023. 132 of them belong to 5 named series — the largest being the Comma Singles series with 82 books — and 18 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Stella Duffy's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Roderick Alleyn (1934–2018, 35 books), Saz Martin (1994–2005, 5 books) and Empress Theodora (2010–2012, 2 books), plus 2 more.

This guide splits Stella Duffy's 150 books into 5 named series and 18 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: Comma Singles (82 books, 2011–2021); Roderick Alleyn (35 books, 1934–2018); Doctor Who: Time Trips (8 books, 2013–2014); Saz Martin (5 books, 1994–2005); Empress Theodora (2 books, 2010–2012).
