Sax Rohmer

Sax Rohmer was the pseudonym used by the well known English author of the mid 20th century named Sir Arthur Sarsfield Ward. He was born on February 15, 1883 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, United Kingdom, and died on June 01, 1959. Rohmer also used to write some of his novels under another pen name Michael Furey.

The best place to start is the Fu Manchu series, the earliest of Sax Rohmer's multi-book series: it opens with The Mystery of Dr. Fu-Manchu / The Insidious Dr. Fu-Manchu (1913) and runs to 16 books across 1913–1987, ending with The Fires of Fu Manchu (1987). Sax Rohmer's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Sax Rohmer has 73 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1913 and 2025. 31 of them belong to 6 named series — the largest being the Fu Manchu series with 16 books — and 42 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Sax Rohmer's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Fu Manchu (1913–1987, 16 books), Gaston Max (1915–1943, 4 books) and "Red" Kerry (1919–2005, 2 books), plus 3 more.

This guide splits Sax Rohmer's 73 books into 6 named series and 42 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: Fu Manchu (16 books, 1913–1987); Sumuru (5 books, 1950–2020); Gaston Max (4 books, 1915–1943); Paul Harley (3 books, 1920–2013); "Red" Kerry (2 books, 1919–2005), plus 1 further series.
