It is a result of the alienating experience of the Rastafari culture that she turned to poetry. Her very first poem was published in the Jamaican Observer when she was 16 years old. Safiya moved to America in 2006 in order to attend college, first earning a BA degree from Bennington College in Vermont. She got her MFA in poetry at the University of Virginia (where she studied with Rita Dove), and her PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Southern California. “Cannibal”, a poetry collection, won the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Metcalf Award, the Phillis Wheatley Book Award, a Whiting Writers’ Award, the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Poetry, and the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry.
