Roy Lewis

Roy Lewis was a prominent English crime writer who wrote more than 60 novels. He is not to be confused with another English novelist with the same name who lived and wrote between 1913 and 1996. Roy Lewis was born in 1933 and passed in 2019.

The best place to start is the Inspector John Crow series, the earliest of Roy Lewis's multi-book series: it opens with A Lover Too Many (1969) and runs to 7 books across 1969–1977, ending with Nothing But Foxes / A Fox Hunting Murder (1977). Roy Lewis's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Roy Lewis has 79 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1960 and 2026. 47 of them belong to 3 named series — the largest being the Arnold Landon series with 22 books — and 32 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Roy Lewis's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Inspector John Crow (1969–1977, 7 books), Eric Ward (1980–2025, 18 books) and Arnold Landon (1983–2012, 22 books).

This guide splits Roy Lewis's 79 books into 3 named series and 32 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: Arnold Landon (22 books, 1983–2012); Eric Ward (18 books, 1980–2025); Inspector John Crow (7 books, 1969–1977).
