Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl was one of the most celebrated British authors, known for his novels, short stories, and screenplays. Of Norwegian descent, he primarily wrote children's books and macabre short stories for adults. Dahl’s literary fame began in the 1940s with his short stories, later expanding to children's fiction, making him one of the world’s bestselling authors.

The best place to start is the Charlie Bucket series, the earliest of Roald Dahl's multi-book series: it opens with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964) and runs to 3 books across 1964–2011, ending with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Pop-Up Book (2011).

Roald Dahl has 112 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1943 and 2024. 5 of them belong to 2 named series — the largest being the Charlie Bucket series with 3 books — and 107 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Roald Dahl's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Charlie Bucket (1964–2011, 3 books) and The Twits (1980–2024, 2 books).

This guide splits Roald Dahl's 112 books into 2 named series and 107 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: Charlie Bucket (3 books, 1964–2011); The Twits (2 books, 1980–2024).
