He grew up in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. His mum is a teacher, named Brenda White and his dad is named David Osman. When Richard was only nine years old, his dad walked out on the family, which created difficulty for the rest of his life. Richard’s older brother, Mat Osman, is the bassist for the rock band Suede. Richard attended Warden Park School in Cuckfield. While he was still in school, he got his very first broadcasting experience, working as a regular contributor to Turn it Up, an open-access music show that went on every Sunday evening on BBC Radio Sussex. From 1989 until 1992, he studied Sociology and Politics at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a contemporary of Pointless co-presenter Alexander Armstrong, who read English Literature.
