After he graduated high school at the Latin School of Chicago in 1987, he went to Vassar College, before transferring and subsequently graduating from Columbia University in 1991 with a degree in Psychology. While he was in school, he started his career writing for this avant garde magazine, called Ear, and edited his first book, “Radiotext(e), which is an anthology of radio related writings for Semiotext(e), a postmodern publisher. Neil moved on to The Village Voice, where (before he became a critic and reporter) he took on tasks that ranged from fact checking, copyediting, and writing copy.
