Matt’s family are Lutheran and he is of German ancestry. His father was a hospital chaplain, and his mother was a missionary’s daughter. His mom was always very supportive of his writing and dreams, and one year she bought him a typewriter as a birthday gift. Ruff’s mother would pass in his last semester at Cornell. A few months later, after his first novel was published, Ruff would also lose his father. Matt got through this by telling himself the story that they had done their jobs, but that doesn’t stop him from continuing to think about and miss them. Their trip takes them to a very old and segregated portion of New England and, eventually, to the manor of Mr. Braithwhite.
