Mat Coward

Not all writers are gifted with the ability to write about anything that comes to their minds. But then there are those who take years to complete their work, and when they are done, it is not just a relief, but it is a joy to read too. The British writer born in 1960 and currently living in Britain’s West Country area, Mat Coward is one of those, who is not just different, but also unique and funny in all of his writings.

The best place to start is the Frank Mitchell and Don Packham series, the earliest of Mat Coward's multi-book series: it opens with Up and Down (2000) and runs to 4 books across 2000–2005, ending with Open and Closed (2005). Mat Coward's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Mat Coward has 91 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1995 and 2022. 73 of them belong to 3 named series — the largest being the Doctor Who: The Companion Chronicles Audio series with 67 books — and 18 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Mat Coward's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Frank Mitchell and Don Packham (2000–2005, 4 books), Doctor Who: The Companion Chronicles Audio (2005–2022, 67 books) and Fortean Times (2009–2013, 2 books).

This guide splits Mat Coward's 91 books into 3 named series and 18 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: Doctor Who: The Companion Chronicles Audio (67 books, 2005–2022); Frank Mitchell and Don Packham (4 books, 2000–2005); Fortean Times (2 books, 2009–2013).
