Margaret Weis

Initially published in 1996, this was to mark the first in off-shoot series of novels from the infamous Dragonlance franchise, which were to go by the name of 'The Chaos War' series. Establishing a whole new line, they were to produce a different set of arcs for the readers to get involved in. Utilizing a somewhat different tone, it still uses a lot of the same rules of the fantasy genre that were laid out beforehand, as this is what her readers have come to expect over the years with her now successful formula.

The best place to start is the Dungeons & Dragons: Endless Quest series, the earliest of Margaret Weis's multi-book series: it opens with Dungeon of Dread (1982) and runs to 55 books across 1982–2019, ending with The Mad Mage's Academy (2019). Margaret Weis's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Margaret Weis has 181 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1982 and 2026. 164 of them belong to 34 named series — the largest being the Dungeons & Dragons: Endless Quest series with 55 books — and 17 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Margaret Weis's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Dungeons & Dragons: Endless Quest (1982–2019, 55 books), Dragonlance: Chronicles (YA) (1984–1989, 6 books) and Dragonlance: Chronicles (1984–1995, 4 books), plus 30 more.
