Koppel loves to call herself equal parts a Jewish writer, extraordinary dumpster diver, and writer. In her work, she loves to inject her own stories and experiences and those of others. This she has asserted is what makes her stories so relatable. Koppel was born and raised in Chicago, even though were parents were initially from New York before they moved to New York. Her father then used to work at the Merc as a trader in the mold of Gordan Gekko. As such, Lily Koppel grew up staring at the John Hancock and the Sears Tower and going to Lincoln Park Zoo. When she was little she used to take the bus with his mother every Friday as they headed to the State Street location of the Marshall Fields department store that even then still felt like a relic.
