She would go on to transfer states to attend the University of North Carolina and study English literature. She graduated with her B.A. and then pursued her M.A., receiving it in creative writing when she graduated from Syracuse University. Once done with grad school, King decided to work abroad. She would teach English to high school students in Valencia, Spain. It was there that she would get to work on her first book. This would be The Pleasing Hour.
