L.E. Modesitt Jr

His first series, Timegod’s World, started in 1982 with The Fires of Paratine. This series was about a race of immortal time travellers and two heroes of that race. His background in environmentalism often shows in his books.

The best place to start is the Ecolitan Matter series, the earliest of L.E. Modesitt Jr's multi-book series: it opens with The Ecologic Envoy (1986) and runs to 4 books across 1986–1997, ending with The Ecolitan Enigma (1997). L.E. Modesitt Jr's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.
