She has the same birthday as Mart Belden, one of her characters. She moved and traveled a lot when she was young since she was the child of an officer in the Army. She won her first writing contest with a short story while she was residing in Hawaii. Before she married she worked at the New York Evening Post as its assistant society editor. She would later go back to the paper for a period of time. Later, she met her future husband and it was love at first sight. She got married on March 30, 1933 to Charles Tatham Junior. They would collaborate on a variety of articles and stories for magazines together.
