He was an avid athlete in high school participating in football, baseball, track, and basketball. After graduating high school he attended Michigan State University, studied Journalism, and was a member of the Michigan State University Lacrosse team. He was also a member of the Reserve Officers Training Corps and became a commissioned officer in the Air Force after graduating college in 1965.
