John Hall

John Hall is an American author of mystery fiction best known for his pastiches of Sherlock Holmes. John was brought up in Brooklyn in New York City, where he lived with his brother and a coterie of more than twenty cousins. He was always a voracious reader and remembers that the first novel he ever read was “It Was Harry The Dirty Dog.” He was by then in the fifth grade and from that day he was hooked into reading and dreamt of one day becoming a professional author.

The best place to start is the Sherlock Holmes Mystery series, the earliest of John Hall's multi-book series: it opens with Sherlock Holmes and the Telephone Murder Mystery (1998) and runs to 8 books across 1998–2008, ending with Sherlock Holmes at the Raffles Hotel (2008).

John Hall has 67 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1993 and 2026. 62 of them belong to 2 named series — the largest being the Sherlock Holmes Mystery series with 8 books — and 5 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. John Hall's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Sherlock Holmes Mystery (1998–2008, 8 books).
