She attended the South Hampstead High School of Hampstead, London, and then attended and graduated from Newnham College at Cambridge University with a Bachelor of the Arts (Honors) in Law in 1962. In 1965, Janet began working as a practicing solicitor. She would also get married to James Lionel Cohen on December 18, 1971. She served as Governor of the BBC from 1994 to 1999. She was made Baroness Cohen of Pimlico in the City of Westminster in May of 2000.
