Hugh Pentecost

Hugh Pentecost is a pen name used by Judson Philips. He also used the pen name Philip Owen and his own name for books. His writing was featured in the television series The Web and he wrote the story for the 1957 movie Appointment with a Shadow.

The best place to start is the Lt. Luke Bradley series, the earliest of Hugh Pentecost's multi-book series: it opens with Cancelled in Red (1939) and runs to 4 books across 1939–1943, ending with The Brass Chills (1943). Hugh Pentecost's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Hugh Pentecost has 88 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1939 and 2008. 72 of them belong to 7 named series — the largest being the Pierre Chambrun Mystery series with 22 books — and 16 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Hugh Pentecost's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Lt. Luke Bradley (1939–1943, 4 books), Dr. John Smith (1947–1950, 2 books) and Pierre Chambrun Mystery (1962–1988, 22 books), plus 4 more.

This guide splits Hugh Pentecost's 88 books into 7 named series and 16 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: Pierre Chambrun Mystery (22 books, 1962–1988); Julian Quist Mystery (16 books, 1971–1987); Worldwide Library Mystery (15 books, 1986–2001); Uncle George Mystery (7 books, 1962–1990); John Jericho Mystery (6 books, 1965–1970), plus 2 further series.
