Homer Hickam is a published author. He is an American veteran and was an engineer for NASA. He is the author of October Sky, which was turned into a 1999 feature length film. He has appeared on multiple television series as himself. Born in 1943, Homer grew up in West Virginia in Coalwood. He graduated high school and later would attend the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He graduated in 1964 with a degree in industrial engineering. He served in Vietnam with the Army for one year until 1968, He was awarded various commendations for his time in active duty. He has been writing ever since he returned from service. At first he would write about his favorite hobby, scuba diving. He has been on many adventures and wrote about some of them. The pieces were published in several magazines.
