Gudenkauf was born in Wagner, South Dakota as the youngest of six children in her family. Her father was employed at the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota where they lived for the early years of her life. They then moved to Iowa where she did the majority of growing up. She was born with a hearing condition known as profound unilateral hearing loss. Because of this, she ended up retreating to reading and could often be found hiding in her toy box with a flashlight and a book. This time as a voracious reader planted the seed in her for a future as an author. Heather would go on to attend the University of Iowa where she would earn her degree in elementary education.
