Georgette Heyer

Published on the 1st of January, 1923, this was a different direction for author Georgette Heyer, as she took another tone that was to help inform her much later work. Developing her voice and style even further, it allowed her to find a voice that was new and different. This was something her many readers would also come to appreciate over the many years as well.

The best place to start is the Alastair-Audley series, the earliest of Georgette Heyer's multi-book series: it opens with These Old Shades (1926) and runs to 4 books across 1926–1937, ending with An Infamous Army (1937). Georgette Heyer's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Georgette Heyer has 110 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1818 and 2026. 52 of them belong to 4 named series — the largest being the Inspector Hannasyde series with 5 books — and 58 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Georgette Heyer's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Alastair-Audley (1926–1937, 4 books), Inspector Hannasyde (1935–1941, 5 books) and Inspector Hemingway (1939–1953, 3 books).

This guide splits Georgette Heyer's 110 books into 4 named series and 58 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: Inspector Hannasyde (5 books, 1935–1941); Alastair-Audley (4 books, 1926–1937); Inspector Hemingway (3 books, 1939–1953); Modern Library Torchbearers (40 books, 1818–2026).
