As a young boy, he was sent to live in Germany and France by his father for a year in order to learn modern languages. This was rather unusual for the son of middle-class English shopkeeper in those times as his parents taught him from a young age that money has to be earned only by hard work. He was an only child and grew up in a semi-detached house with an entire top floor to himself. His father’s support and influence was th.
