She won acclaim from the LGTB community, and the Ferro-Grumley Award for lesbian fiction for her 2000 novel Slammerkin. The novel Room was adapted into a feature film, and Donoghue wrote the screenplay for it. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. It was also nominated for three more Academy Awards, Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Picture, but was not the winner in any of these categories. She is known as a prolific writer.
