Edward Marston

Edward Marston is the pseudonym used by the famous British author Keith Miles for writing mystery and historical fiction novels. Edward also writes under his original name sometimes. Other than these names, he has also written novels featuring ship's detectives under other pseudonyms Conrad Allen and Martin Inigo.

The best place to start is the Peter Lovesey Short Stories/Novellas series, the earliest of Edward Marston's multi-book series: it opens with Vandals (1985) and runs to 4 books across 1985–1997, ending with Corbett Correspondence (1997). Edward Marston's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Edward Marston has 123 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1973 and 2026. 111 of them belong to 16 named series — the largest being the Inspector Robert Colbeck series with 25 books — and 12 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Edward Marston's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Frankenstein Horror (1973, 1 book), Peter Lovesey Short Stories/Novellas (1985–1997, 4 books) and Alan Saxon (1986–2012, 6 books), plus 13 more.

This guide splits Edward Marston's 123 books into 16 named series and 12 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: Inspector Robert Colbeck (25 books, 2004–2026); Elizabethan Theater (16 books, 1988–2006); Domesday (11 books, 1993–2000); Home Front Detective (11 books, 2011–2024); Dillman & Masefield / Ocean Liner Mysteries (8 books, 1999–2007), plus 11 further series.
