Edmund White

On the scholarly front, Edmund White was a Johns Hopkins assistant professor, then a Columbia University School Adjunct professor and a Brown University professor. In 1998 he got a job at Princeton University as professor until his retirement in 2018. During his many years in academia, he had served as New York Institute for the Humanities as a director and was also the director of the Princeton creative writing program.

The best place to start is the Adam Mars-Jones Collections series, the earliest of Edmund White's multi-book series: it opens with Lantern Lecture and Other Stories (1981) and runs to 4 books across 1981–1992, ending with Monopolies of Loss (1992). Edmund White's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Edmund White has 82 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1960 and 2025. 44 of them belong to 4 named series — the largest being the Writer and the City series with 5 books — and 38 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Edmund White's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Adam Mars-Jones Collections (1981–1992, 4 books), The Edmund Trilogy (1982–1997, 3 books) and Writer and the City (2001–2008, 5 books).

This guide splits Edmund White's 82 books into 4 named series and 38 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: Writer and the City (5 books, 2001–2008); Adam Mars-Jones Collections (4 books, 1981–1992); The Edmund Trilogy (3 books, 1982–1997); Penguin Lives (32 books, 1960–2011).
