Gilman’s early days’ experience saw her get into writing, commencing her writing journey at only nine years. At the age of 11, Dorothy Gilman won a much-contested story tournament where she competed against children aged between 10-16 years. Dorothy Gilman attended Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts between the years 1940 to 1945 where she learned and planned to write illustrative books for children.
