Dennis Wheatley

Dennis Wheatley was born Dennis Yates Wheatley on 8th January 1897. By the time of his death on the 10th of November 1977, he had been one of the most prolific authors Britain has ever produced. Dennis was the eldest son to Florence Elizabeth and Albert David and had two siblings.

The best place to start is the Duke de Richleau series, the earliest of Dennis Wheatley's multi-book series: it opens with The Forbidden Territory (1933) and runs to 11 books across 1933–1972, ending with Gateway to Hell (1972). Dennis Wheatley's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Dennis Wheatley has 90 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1933 and 1985. 54 of them belong to 7 named series — the largest being the Roger Brook series with 12 books — and 36 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Dennis Wheatley's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Duke de Richleau (1933–1972, 11 books), Black Magic (1934–1973, 12 books) and Gregory Sallust (1934–1968, 11 books), plus 4 more.

This guide splits Dennis Wheatley's 90 books into 7 named series and 36 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: Roger Brook (12 books, 1947–1974); Black Magic (12 books, 1934–1973); Duke de Richleau (11 books, 1933–1972); Gregory Sallust (11 books, 1934–1968); Julian Day (3 books, 1939–1964), plus 2 further series.
