Deborah Wiles is an American published author of fiction also known for writing children’s books. She was born on May 5, 1953, in Mobile, Alabama. She was part of an Air Force family and as result grew up in a small town in Mississippi. Her family was full of characters and they continue to inspire her today and find some place in her stories. She has written several novels. Her debut fiction novel was Love, Ruby Lavender and it was published in 2001. She has had two of her books become finalists for the National Book Award, Each Little Bird That Sings and her novel Revolution. She received the New Writer Award from Ezra Jack Keats for Freedom Summer, her picture book. She has gone on to be a finalist for the NAACP Book Award and the Jane Addams Peace Award. She has won the E.B. Whit. Deborah Wiles is the author of over 14 books across 6 series.
