Daniel Quinn Daniel Clarence Quinn (October 11, 1935 – February 17, 2018) is most widely known for his novel Ishmael. Mr. Quinn was widely considered an environmentalist, although he didn’t appreciate the characterization as it implied the environment was separate from human life. Mr. Quinn was born in Omaha, Nebraska. After graduating from Creighton Preparatory School, he studied first at St. Louis University. Through the IES Abroad program he attended the University of Vienna, Austria. He returned to the United States and studied at Loyola University, Chicago and received a bachelor’s degree in English, with cum laude honors. He took some time off from education while he was a postulant at the Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani in Bardstown, Kentucky.
