Carter Brown

A British-Australian author, the writer Alan Geoffrey Yates made some considerable impact as an author during his time. Producing large quantities of crime and detective stories, he would create a vast number of books during his long and illustrious writing career. With an eye and an ear for realism, he was gifted at building worlds that at once seem wholly realistic, whilst also allowing the reader to escape into them.

The best place to start is the Al Wheeler series, the earliest of Carter Brown's multi-book series: it opens with The Blonde (1955) and runs to 54 books across 1955–1984, ending with Stab in the Dark (1984). Carter Brown's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Carter Brown has 273 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1949 and 1984. 163 of them belong to 11 named series — the largest being the Al Wheeler series with 54 books — and 110 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Carter Brown's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Al Wheeler (1955–1984, 54 books), Mavis Seidlitz (1955–1974, 13 books) and Rick Holman (1956–1981, 37 books), plus 8 more.

This guide splits Carter Brown's 273 books into 11 named series and 110 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: Al Wheeler (54 books, 1955–1984); Rick Holman (37 books, 1956–1981); Danny Boyd (35 books, 1956–1984); Mavis Seidlitz (13 books, 1955–1974); Larry Baker (6 books, 1963–1975), plus 6 further series.
