Andrea Camilleri

Andrea Camilleri was born in 1925 to harbor official Giuseppe and his wife Carmelina Camilleri. He grew up in the small Sicilian west coast town of Empedocle during the dictatorship of Italy’s fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. He was always an innovative and disruptive child and was expelled from a Catholic School for defacing a crucifix.

The best place to start is the Inspector Montalbano series, the earliest of Andrea Camilleri's multi-book series: it opens with The Shape of Water (1994) and runs to 31 books across 1994–2021, ending with Riccardino (2021). Andrea Camilleri's other series stand alone, so they can be read in any order.

Andrea Camilleri has 60 books catalogued in this guide, published between 1992 and 2021. 52 of them belong to 2 named series — the largest being the Inspector Montalbano series with 31 books — and 8 are standalone titles, collections or anthologies.

Read each series in publication order — the numbered entries in each series follow the year each book first appeared. Andrea Camilleri's series do not depend on one another, so they can be started in any order; by start date they are Inspector Montalbano (1994–2021, 31 books) and Inspector Montalbano Short Stories/Novellas (1998–2013, 21 books).

This guide splits Andrea Camilleri's 60 books into 2 named series and 8 titles that stand alone or appear only in collections: Inspector Montalbano (31 books, 1994–2021); Inspector Montalbano Short Stories/Novellas (21 books, 1998–2013).
